Bagong Alyansang Makabayan Statement August 12, 2025
Today the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan spearheads another protest at the Supreme Court to condemn it’s ruling on the Duterte impeachment complaint and it’s role in propping up the corrupt system of governance in the country.

By now, it is painfully clear that the ruling rests on a grave misreading of the facts and the law. In imposing new and onerous requirements on the impeachment process, the High Court overstepped its bounds and encroached on the Constitutionally exclusive power of Congress to impeach public officials. Worse, the decision was blatantly self-serving, shielding the justices themselves—who are also impeachable officials—from future accountability.
This ruling is a severe blow to public accountability at the highest levels of government. It does not merely protect Vice President Sara Duterte; it also arms all impeachable officials with fresh tools to frustrate any attempt to hold them to account for wrongdoing. It opens the door wider to impunity.

The decision is so bad it reeks of desperation—a brazen attempt to block Duterte’s impeachment at all costs. Like the President and the Senate, the Supreme Court is more concerned with preserving the political status quo than with confronting the urgent task of holding Duterte accountable for betrayal of public trust, bribery, and corruption. This is the kind of collusion that the ruling elites enter into to protect their own and the system that benefits them.

Of course the Supreme Court can still correct its course by reversing this deeply flawed ruling. But it will take sustained people’s protests to do this.
We urge the justices: set aside your utang na loob to former president Duterte. Disregard the vacillating statements of Pres. Marcos Jr.
Do what is right.
Do what is just.
Stand for accountability, not impunity.
