Malaya Movement Canada is closely monitoring the recent arrest of Rodrigo Duterte pursuant to an ICC warrant for crimes against humanity and conveys to the Filipino people that justice may be attained against a despotic and impunity-driven dictatorship. This is the moment the Filipinos have anticipated following Duterte’s brutal drug war, which resulted in the deaths of innocent civilians whose families have been seeking justice. The impunity fostered by the Duterte tyranny cannot be overlooked, and ultimately, the people’s demand for justice will triumph. Let history now fulfill its promise of hope for the victims of the drug war that Duterte claimed would eradicate the proliferation of drugs and drug lords, when in reality, he supported and protected those drug lords instead of safeguarding the impoverished individuals who became victims of Duterte’s grave human rights violations.
Malaya Movement Canada remains hopeful and stands in solidarity with the Filipino people, demanding the imprisonment of Duterte and all responsible for the suffering of human rights victims and their families. This serves as a reminder to all authoritarian and oppressive regimes that impunity and crimes against humanity will ultimately fail, as justice will win regardless of the time required to get it. The united Filipino people will consistently challenge any authoritarian dictatorship that seeks to maintain power and repress the resolute determination of the people to resist and prevail. ###
