JUSTICE FOR ERICSON ACOSTA!
A cultural activist for more than 20 years and former editor of the UP Philippine Collegian, 50-year-old Ericson Acosta (pictured here with her wife Kerima Tariman) has devoted the majority of his life to assisting underprivileged and oppressed peasants throughout the Philippines.

Ericson Acosta—poet, researcher, organizer, activist—had been working for peace in every capacity imaginable. And on November 30, 2022, he was killed for it.

A former editor of the UP Philippine Collegian and who worked as a cultural activist for more than 2 decades, Ericson, 50, devoted most of his life to serving the poor and oppressed peasants in different parts of the Philippines. He had been conducting research in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, consulting farmers on their living and working conditions when he, along with Joseph Jimenez, another peasant organizer, was captured by elements of the 94th and 47th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army and then killed. The military desperately tries to justify his killing by portraying him as an armed combatant at the time of his death. Locals said no firefight nor encounter took place. Ericson and his companion were unarmed.

Ericson’s death is all too familiar nowadays. Unarmed activists are routinely targeted by military action. Revolutionaries are summarily executed in violation of international humanitarian law. The silencing of all forms of dissent is used to maintain the prevailing oppressive social order.

For his work with the peasant movement, Ericson was tapped by the NDF as a consultant on issues of agrarian reform and rural development (ARRD) during the 2016-2017 peace talks with the Duterte regime. His experience in peasant organizing, coupled with his theoretical knowledge of agrarian issues, made him an invaluable resource for developing the NDF’s draft of the Comprehensive Agreement on Social and Economic Reforms (CASER)—a key document of the peace talks.

Even before directly taking part in the peace talks as an NDF consultant, Ericson had a long history of activism dating back to his days at the University of the Philippines. In 2011 he was arrested in San Jorge, Samar for the fabricated charge of illegal possession of explosives. For its lack of merit and due to various irregularities, the DOJ withdrew the case in 2013. Upon his release, Ericson went back to peasant organizing and research in Central Luzon and other parts of the country. He was arrested again in 2013 along with other agrarian reform advocates in Hacienda Luisita.

A prolific writer, Ericson earned a National Book Award for poetry in 2016. He also wrote the screenplay for the movie The Guerilla is a Poet together with wife Kerima Tariman. He never stopped working for peace, firmly believing that peace could only ever be achieved if it rested on justice.

We enjoin all advocates of peace, justice, and democracy to join us—his comrades, allies, colleagues, friends, and family—in calling for justice for Ericson Acosta. The circumstances of his death must be thoroughly investigated and those responsible be held accountable. We call for an end to impunity and all human rights violations. We join the call for genuine peace based on justice.

Justice for Ericson Acosta! Justice for all victims of state impunity!
