Malaya Canada stands in solidarity with the Filipino people in marking the impeachment of the nation’s second highest official, Vice President Sara Duterte. The impeachment was approved after Sara Duterte’s misappropriation of government funds during her tenure as Secretary of Education under President Bongbong Marcos Jr., the son of the late dictator.
The recent impeachment of Sara Duterte exemplifies to the Filipino people the value of collective resistance against a fascist and corrupt administration that thrives amidst the widespread suffering of its citizens, characterized by pervasive poverty, elevated costs of basic services such as electricity and water, rampant unemployment, inadequate wages, human rights abuses and poorly managed healthcare services. This has led to over 7,000 Filipinos departing the country everyday in search of employment and opportunities abroad.
Although the impeachment was a cause for celebration, it was only the start of the struggle. The Filipino people is resolute in advocating for Sara Duterte’s complete conviction, which now depends on the 24 senators, two-thirds of whom must vote for her impeachment to bring about her removal from office. Recent sources indicate that Senator Imee Marcos, a close friend and ally, has stated she will not endorse the impeachment of Sara Duterte in the Senate. Equally concerning is Malacanang’s prior declaration that such impeachment is damaging to the country.
Malaya Canada, along with all other patriotic forces abroad, can make a significant contribution during this political crisis in the Philippines by ensuring that elected officials promote the true interests of the Filipino people. Sara Duterte and those who would back her in the Senate, as well as others who are allied with her, should be defeated by the next elections, and this should serve as a clear reminder to all of us that fascist and corrupt people should no longer be permitted to rule our country. We strongly urge the Philippine Senate to conduct the impeachment trial with the utmost priority, fairness, uphold the Philippine Constitution, and set aside personal interests.
